6Stirling Moss sets an outstanding record in a Mercedes-Benz
Mille Miglia 1955

Adriano Cimarosti

After twenty-four years Mercedes-Benz was back, with the debut of the 300 SLR driven by racing ace Stirling Moss, who thanks to the good weathers set a new record at an incredible average speed of 157.65 kilometers per hour. World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio, also in a Mercedes-Benz, came in second ahead of the Ferrari driven by Umberto Maglioli.

There are time-honoured competitors. Some cars, for sure, but also teams which have taken part more than ten times. Those are the teams that want a win, or a good placing, and sooner or later would like to be given a car by one of the manufacturers. They all turn out in spotless racing suits, with high tech chronometers and back-up teams. But none of them is experiencing the heightened thrill of the "first time".

Ten was the number of all-women teams taking part in the 23rd revival of the historical Mille Miglia this year, 2005.
Ten all-female teams: both drivers and navigators. Ten determined duos battling it out for a win in this year's extraordinary event, set to go down in history as the perfect Mille Miglia.

30La mia prima Mille Miglia

Federica Balestrieri
