11Mille Miglia 1984

Giuseppe Lucchini

From this page which opens a throbbing new survey of pictures, I am happy to be able to state that the promises made in the preface of the previous volume "Mille Miglia '82" have been translated into concreate reality by the "Mille Miglia '84".
15In remembrance of Corrado
Corrado Millanta Portfolio
For hours on end, on the winding road of the Cisa pass, a sixteen-year-old boy had waited for the first Mille Miglia drivers to arrive. Never before had he witnessed such an important car race as to mobilize the whole of Italy and not only the motor-racing fans.

37The identikit of a competitor

Manuel Vigliani

Let's draw the identikit of the 1984 MIlle Miglia competitor, looking for what is to be found in the tunnel of the past of a dynamic collector who, out of respect for the more up to date interpretation of this hobby which often becomes a sport, does not hesitate to slip into an uncomfortable car which is mechanically difficult to run and basically unrewarding to drive but precious and fervently loved, in order to tackle the long race - which can also change into a risky adventure - of a Mille Miglia.

Thirty years ago, when I wanted to show off in front of the group, I would cast a casual: my uncle with the Alfa 1900 ... Now that I am driving one during the first leg of the Mille Miglia I think: What a driver my uncle was!

Graham Robson

It was like being in a fantastic dream for three days... but with so many highlights. How will I remember it all in years to come? The wonderful cars all around us - Alfa Romeo 8C 2300's one minute, Ferrari 250 MM the next?
113Engines roar, they're off; the Mille Miglia, a journey into memories
la Repubblica (ITA)

Guido Vergani

Brescia 24th. The starter lowers the flag at 30 second intervals. The cars face down towards the tarmac at the bottom of the short slop of the wooden platform. We are going towards memories, a sort of ostentatious "recherche" along the Mille Miglia, and itinerary of memories along the road of epics. An old Bugatti, of shining blue, breathes asthmatically. Few of the 222 rivals of Varzi, of Ascari, of Caracciola, forego racing their engines so that this replay might seem to be as realistic as possible.
137Not only a recollection, it was a really difficult race!

Luca Grandori

I sent in my entry to the Mille Miglia certain of seeing many beautiful cars, many legendary personalities, but also afraid that I would hear too much rhetoric and nostalgia, feelings which I simply loathe.

Nestore Morosini

Brescia - "Come on, it's our turn!" Riccardo Patrese's voice sounds out of tune. Usually, a Formula 1 driver has no "tenant" by his side at the start of a race. The start in Brescia, however, is something special: it is the historical revival of the most famous car race in Italy (and probably in the world too).

Robert Sutherland

Between 1927 and 1957 (excluding the war years), the world's bravest drivers competed in the Mille Miglia, driving which varied from the most modest Fiats to Grand Prix cars fitted out with the lights and windshields. The race was from Brescia in the north of Italy to Rome, then back, on country roads and city streets - 1,000 miles.

Nestore Morosini

Brescia - "Dài, andiamo. Tocca a noi".
