The seventh running of the Colorado Grand featured twenty four grand and glorious Ferraris among the more than eighty cars participating in America's foremost touring event. The Monterey weekend included the Concours Italiana, and over 400 classic and exotic Italian automobiles and motorcycles were present, including 120 Ferraris. This latter was due to the efforts of the FOC and the FCA. Giorgetto Giugiaro was the special guest, and one always wondered what the results would have been if he had been allowed to design some Ferraris.

These early Ferrari 250 GTs were constructed in answer to a competitive threat - Ferrari's response was strong enough to retake a World Championship and add to a growing legend.

Olivier Gendebien was one of a number of outstanding Belgian gentlemen drivers in the fifties and early sixties. He was atypical in that his skill vaulted him to the professional level. His racing talents were mostly applied to Ferraris, and he stablished himself as one of the best sports car drivers during the period.

The Touring body found on these Ferrari 166 MM convertibles is famous, and rightfully so. Designed by the established Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, it was so different from the other two-seater 'Spider' sports cars that when the journalists saw it they found it necessary to invent a new name to identify it; the name 'barchetta', for little boat, which from that moment distinguished that type of body.

With the passing of Juan Manuel Fangio on July 17, 1995, it is appropriate for Cavallino to review Fangio's involvement with Enzo Ferrari. Sadly, the relationship did not show either man at his best.

After we went to press with the last issue, the second bombshell was dropped by Ferrari: Gerhard Berger was leaving the team as well, heading in 1996 to Benetton to partner Jean Alesi. Everyone was caught off guard, but on reflection, it was seen to be inevitable. In late September Ferrari announced it had signed up Eddie Irvine to be No. 2.

46CommentoAn evening with Olivier Gendebien and ... a tornado

Marc Sonnery

Alexis Callier

Spending an evening by the fireplace in a French chateau listening to a four time Le Mans Ferrari winner is reason enough to remember, but if you add to it a violent tornado in the middle of dinner, complete with 100 year old trees falling like twigs, well, we indeed have ... a twice unforgettable evening in 1993.

Why do we all like Le Mans? And why do we all want Ferrari back there, even though we understand Ferrari's hesitation about going back until the Ferrari F333 SP's endurance capabilities are known?
Le Mans is a huge event, in size and prestige, and is rivalled today only by the Indy 500. Ferrari was at Le Mans often, and won many times, and its name is part and parcel of this French classic.
