The Magazine for Ferrari Enthusiasts

Cavallino is the journal of Ferrari history, covering Ferraris old and new for over 40 years. It's the most reliable, most trusted source of everything Ferrari. Ever since the first issue in 1978 Cavallino presents extensive stories and detailed information from knowledgeable experts and enthusiasts who share the passion for Ferrari. All Ferraris are unique, and each one has its own chassis serial number. This is how the Ferrari world keeps track of all the great cars. Cavallino is the only publication that prints the serial number for every Ferrari mentioned in our stories, articles, and race results.

We seem to be full of racing this issue of Cavallino, but then, to the purist, what are Ferraris really for but race? From Enzo Ferrari's point of view, those wonderful production cars which we adore, sitting with such calm assurance in the sunlight or gliding happily down the boulevard, are, and were, something to pay the tab for the race cars and the racing activity.

The results of the recent auctions in Geneva and Monaco are printed herewith. They confirm that Ferrari prices, particularly for the racing cars, are continuing their meteoric rise! Recent private sales were equally strong.
15ArteAutomotive Masterpieces in Wood
Dennis Hoyt

Jacques Vaucher

Blending skill, ingenuity and a genuine love for automobiles, Dennis Hoyt is a sculptor who breathes life into wood. Dennis is what I call a "restless artist." He wanted to sculpt but was not content with the ubiquitous bronze and clay. So he created automative sculptures in wood. These works, however, are not small scale wooden model replicas; they are large detailed sculptures of select sections of exotic automobiles.
17LetteraturaLe Corse Ruggenti - La Vera Storia di Enzo Ferrari Pilota
by Giulio Schmidt, with Franco Varisco and Pepi Cereda

Pietro Castiglioni

An Italian journalist, with the unusual name of Giulio Schmidt, is the author of this new book. The title translates to The Roaring Races: The True Story of Enzo Ferrari as a Race Car Driver. It tells us exactly what is covered in this book - the history of Enzo Ferrari at the wheel of a race car.

A Fable of the Marketplace

Michael T. Lynch

I've been around cars all my life. Like my father before me, I'm a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
My friends and neighbors always ask me what kind of car they should buy. I pride myself on my ability to buy interesting cars, fix them up, drive them for a while and then sell them for a profit.
But I've always had a dream.

For Ferrari the road to Indy started in November, 1947, when they rehired Aurelio Lampredi. The young Lamprey had previously worked for Ferrari as the assistant to their first Technical Director, Giuseppe Busso but left due to disagreements with Busso over engine design fundamentals.

Take a Ride in Ferrari Testa Rossa No. 0732 TR in the 1988 Mille Miglia

Michael Sheehan

K. Tsuruta, Marcel Massini, Attualfoto, Automobile Club Brescia

The Mille Miglia Historica is unquestionably the most prestigious, historical automotive event in the world. Entry in itself is an honor, for it requires ownership of one of the world's most significant historical race cars. Much has been written about the history, the cars, the personalities, but little about the realities of participation, the inevitable problems with cars thirty plus years old, or the overwhelming and addictive nature of the event.

Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959

Hilary Raab, Rudolf Hunziker

The new breed squares off. Near the entrance tot the Fiorano test track, an F40, No. 76354, leads the way for a Porsche 959. The dat was May 3, 1988, and the 959 was present to do a comparison test with the F40 at Fiorano. The occasion was an excuse to do a story for a German auto magazine, but you can be sure both Ferrari and Porsche were making careful notes.

Ferraris have a long tradition in Switzerland, the first Ferrari appeared in 1948 in a Swiss race! Today there are some 2.000 Ferraris, an not less then three Ferrari Owners Clubs exist in the little country known for its banks, watches and chocolate. The meeting point for the annual meeting of the biggest Ferrari Club in Switzerland, the Bugatti-Ferrari Owners' Club, founded in 1972, took place at the estate of Charles G. Renaud at Cortaillod, a beautiful spot situated at the Lake of Neuchâtel.

Hillary Raab, Club Gilles Villeneuve No. 461

The second annual meeting in April of "Raduno Internationale Sicilia in Ferrari", organized and sponsored by the "Ferrari Club Gilles Villeneuve No. 461" of Palermo was a great success, with over 60 Ferraris making the trek to that enchanting island.

Color and Concepts, run by Dick and Sally Daley, held their second annual "Sweet Dreams" car classic at the Yale Polo Grounds in June. Like last year, they were able to coax some unique classic and exotic cars out of some area collections for an excellent car display.

We made a trip down to the 7th Annual Philadelphia Ferrari Festival in June and were pleasantly surprised at how well the organizers under the stewardship of Patrick J. Boova had made this annual meeting such an enjoyable occasion. Imagine, if you will, a long, gently sloping hill at the Eagle Lodge Country Club, fully arrayed with over 110 Ferraris, perfect weather, excellent food, and over 300 Ferrari people loafing around.

Coppa d'Italia 1988

Michael Sheehan

Attualfoto, Steve Snyder

Although the Coppa d'Italia, or Italian Cup, is one of the most prestigious and competitive historic automobile events in the world, it is not well known in the U.S.A. Having just returned from the Coppa, I feel many more Americans would attend, if they only knew more about Europe's most exciting and competitive event for historical cars.

59CorseYou Mean, they really Race those things?
The Michelin Maranello Ferrari Challenge has begun again in Great Britain (with one race in the Netherlands) and yes, they do take their production Ferraris to the racetracks and yes, they do race them.
These are not high speed cruising events, or even toned down competition charades. These are Ferrari fully prepped for racing.
