16 2008 Le Mans Classic continues as... a Classic
Le Mans Classic 2008 - Le Mans, France - July 11-13, 2008

The Le Mans "Classic" was started in order to bring back the glory days of the Le Mans 24 Hour race, glory in the historical sense of bringing back all the wonderful cars that took part in epic battles of days gone by. In that sense, it was initially just one more poesy in a bouquet of blossoming car events for historical vehicles, but as other events matured, stagnated or died altogether, this Historic Le Mans event has become an overwhelming success.

20 Summer Sun & Fun at Greenwich
Greenwich Concours Europa International - Greenwich, CT - June 8, 2008

The Greenwich Concours this year was blessed with good weather, and all to the good, as Bruce and Genia Wennerstrom manage to bring our some truly spectacular cars hiding out in some notable collections in the Northeast. The Wennerstroms have been intimately involved in the car hobby for years and know who owns what, and they combine this with personal charm and excellent organization to host a Concours which has been a success from the start.

23 Goodwood Festival continues to astound
Goodwood Festival of Speed - Goodwood, England - July 11-13, 2008

Goodwill House owed by Lord March is over-the-top anyway, and you combine this with a famous automotive race track as well as a a renowned horse rain track and you have an ideal country playground. The Festival of Speed that is hosted by Lord March is just that - a celebration of speed would perhaps be more precise.

The automotive world was shocked and saddened recently when it was announced that Andrea Pininfarina had died on Thursday, August 7, in an accident when his Vespa scooter collided with a car. 36 "Sperimentale"
The 250 GT Passo Corto "Sperimentale" Berlinetta, s/n 2643 GT

The body style of s/n 2643 GT was very similar to those of the Ferrari 400 Superamerica coupes, but without the adornments like bumpers, chrome trim and fancy light treatment of that model, whilst the body was constructed from light alloy formed over a frame of light chrome-molybendum steel tubing. The shape was very elegant, with the rounded nose denominated by the shallow elliptical radiator opening.

46 Mar del Plata 1950
Ferrari take the 1949/1950 Temporada as race three is pivotal

Ferrari, Four; the rest, Zero ... that was the victory count corresponding to the Scuderia's trek to Argentina for the four round Temporada, which took place between December 18th, 1949 and January 22nd, 1950, with Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi each scoring two victories aboard their works Grand Prix cars. The third of those four rounds, at Mar del Plata, saw Villoresi challenge Juan Manuel Fangio's privateer Ferrari for the lead until both of them tangled and crash out, allowing Ascari to sail on towards a comfortable win.

52 No longer a simple Monterey Weekend
Ferrari threads its way through a very long and involved week of Monterey activities

It was an interesting and absorbing Monterey week with the usual plethora of stunning automobiles set in mostly gorgeous and enviable California settings and prominent and established events. The only negative was an underlying current of concern among event organizers (and sponsors, auction houses and car dealers for that matter) as to how much the current recession was going to affect entries and spectator attendance. 67 Leasing a high-end car in today's economy - and an anniversary
Leasing & the market

As noted briefly elsewhere in this issue, the auctions in Monterey were closely watched by everyone for an indication of where the collector car market might be heading as this recession progresses. Overall it can be stated that first-class collector cars - high profile marques and models, good clean owner histories, documented resume, good to excellent condition (or the complete obverse - unreported cars with good patina) - bought very good results, while average cars and poor cars did just that - average and poor.
