10 A new home away from home for Scuderia Ferrari
Formula One

In the Formula One paddock, it's all about image, as each team spends an increasing part of their budget to set up camp for the weekend. For the most part, it used to be who had the largest and cleanest motorhomes and trails, with the most amenities inside, and with the most imaginative paint job on the outside. McLaren changed all that several years ago when in introduced what was essentially a rather grand set-up office building, which housed everything needed to manage a Grand Prix team at a circuit.

Changes at Mugello

The famous Autodromo del Mugello in Italy is, of course, a race course owned by Ferrari, and used for quite a number of motorsports events, but used mainly as a test facility for the company's cars and as a place to hold special events, most notably the annual Challenge finals each year. It was always a well designed and well maintained track, but now Ferrari has seen fit to make some improvements.

15 The Classic 24
Le Mans 24 Hour race - June 16-17, 2007

Le Mans is magic, attracting spectators in their thousands to the charismatic road course in central France. The 2007 running was no exception, fuelled (pun intended) by the battle of the diesels, between Audi and Peugeot, the latter having former F1 World Drivers' Champion Jacques Villeneuve in their driver line up. This confrontation obviously captured the imagination of the public, as a record crowd of over 250,000 spectators gathered to witness the titanic duel.

16 The Ferrari auction, as presented by RM Auctions & Sotheby's, can only be described as a complete success
Ferrari - Leggenda e Passione auction, Maranello, Italy - May 20, 2007

It was a scene to behold - Ferrari after Ferrari being sold one after the other, with little hesitation and much enthusiasm and brio. What a different world we live in from just two years ago. Way back then, at the inaugural Ferrari/Sotheby's auction, everything seemed to work against that poor orphan - wrong weekend, hot weather, tepid auction technique, vapid promotion, and ironically, too many good cars on offer.

20 Ferrari's 60 years
60th Anniversary Concorso d'Eleganza

Doing anything continuously for 60 years is a major achievement, but building the world's most exciting cars for that long is nothing short of sensational. Accordingly, Ferrari celebrated its 60th birthday in sensational fashion over the weekend of June 23 and 24 in and around Maranello, with a world class Concours d'Elegance, Formula One exhibition laps, a fly-over by Italian military jets, plenty of top-notch food, and easily the best fireworks display any of us had ever seen.

28 The Tour Auto 2007 again brings out the best
Tour Auto - Paris to Evian, France - April 24-28, 2007

The Tour Auto for 2007 decided to celebrate the fifty years anniversaries of the victory of two famous models, the Ferrari 250 GT and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Much attention was therefore focused on these two models, and so one found a large number among the entrants. About 230 sporting cars took the start from Paris, which began with a nice display on the first day at the Grand Palais.

36 The Mille Miglia 2007 sees many of its former competing cars
Brescia - Rome - Brescia, Italy - May 17-20, 2007

Always a grand affair, the Mille Miglia this year was no exception, and indeed it had much to celebrate. It was the 80th Anniversary of the first original edition, in 1927, and the 50th Anniversary of the last one as a real unrestricted race, in 1957. This year also saw the 25th edition of this moving testimonial to the glory of the original 1,000 mile race, and to the men and cars that contested it.

39 Keeping your summer calendar full ...

Ferraris are now represented at many automotive events, often being the stars of the show, and of course, there are many show dedicated exclusively to Ferrari alone. On of the grandest in recent memory was the Ferrari Racing Days at Silverstone, on June 9-10, to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Ferrari and the 40th Anniversary of the Ferrari Owners Club Great Britain.

The Italia firm of Terzo Dalia has chosen this model on which to concentrate their latest scale modelling efforts, with the expected superb results.

48 The White Berlinetta
Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, s/n 2033 GT

In 1960, if you wanted to own a street Ferrari, and met the prerequisites, you had four models to think about, each going for around $13,000. OK, five models if you include the built-to-order and somewhat expensive Superamericas. Potential buyers could choose between an open 250 GT cabriolet or short wheelbase California spyder, or the brand new four passenger 250 GTE coupe, or a short wheelbase berlinetta.

The perfect Ferrari for the perfect Gentleman

Ever since I have been the proud guardian of my first vintage Ferrari, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2, s/n 3961, purchased in 1999 in California, I have been fascinated by the classic cars produced during the sixties by the famous prancing horse factory in Maranello. Like many owners of classic cars, I have a list of vintage Ferrari cars I would like to guard, if the possibilities are there. On top of my list for many years was a 330 GTC coupe.

Greg Garrison was a private collector, in that his public life was never part of hist passion for collecting, and collecting rare Ferraris.

72 The Ferraris at Monterey

Concorso Italiano - Gather over 1,000 Italian sports and GT cars, and in that over 350 Ferraris, plus 600 non-Italian marque cars, plus whatever shows up in the parking lost, plus hundreds of serious vendors, fashion shows, opera, fine food and wine, and you have the blockbuster Concorso Italiano, now in its 22nd year. Pebble Beach - This is the grand daddy of all car events, the oldest and most prestigious, and justifiably so. Every old classic car that is bought, found and then restored wants to make its debut at Pebble, and it has become the classic meeting place for heads-on competition between the major collectors, and among the most top rated restoration houses. Monterey Historics - This is never the Ferrari festival one would hope for, because the justly famous Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Laguna Seca caters to all old race cars, not just to our favourite marques. There are many great and historic Ferraris out there, and many willing to race, but the world of vintage car racing is so much larger. Art of the Week - It's all about beautiful automobiles, over the long Monterey week, and what is more appropriate than the appreciation of this beauty in the form of art. There is plenty to be had at Monterey, not only at the various events that have art displays, but also in the many art galleries to be found in Carmel, Carmel Valley, and Monterey.

76 The importance of Yellow Paint on your Ferrari
It's in the details

Ferrari used yellow point on the suspension components to mark those parts that had been installed and brought up to the final torque. This practice was adopted from the aircraft industry, and was a way to insure that an assembly had been tightened in the event that there was a time lapse during the process. If the mechanic left the suspension only party completed overnight, he would know what have been done when he returned to work the next day.

94 A Guide to all Ferraris produced
Plus the market as of August 1, 2007... from a survey of selected dealers

Last issue we noted a nice upsurge in the market, but said we'd have to wait for the Ferrari auction in Maranello to see if this was a trend. As you now know, the auction was a success by any measure, and at this point, the results can only bolster whatever upward trend that was already in place. There is some trouble in the financial markets that has slowed the activity of some investors in certain sectors, but the damaged seems contained.
