14 American English Ferraris, and others, take over L.A.

In the first ever event of its kind in the car capital of the west, Los Angeles hosted vintage races on its downtown streets in front of Union Station over the Labor Day weekend. Hundreds of older sports cars in thirty five classis ran the improvised course, in front of a large crowd. There was also a Concours d'Elegance for Ferraris and a good selection took part.

American English Auction prices firm up for selected models

More Ferraris are showing up at auctions again, and more are selling, now that owners are setting realistic reserves. Over the Monterey weekend, the Christie's people did well with the Ferraris from Mel Blanc's collection. During the same weekend Rick Cole's group moved a lovely 1956 500 TR, s/n 0650 MDTR.

American English Concours Italiano continues to delight

The range of Italian automobiles drawn to the one day affair in Carmel Valley is always impressive, and 450 examples were on hand to be seen by 10.000 people in perfect weather. The cars of DeTomaso were featured, and there were guests from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Fiat, Lancia, Bertone, Italdesign and Iso Rivolta. Ferraris accounted for 150 cars of the field.

Making the rounds this past year to all major Concours has been Lorenzo Zambrano's 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB, s/n 3269 GT, with the very special and very beautiful body by Nuccio Bertone. It came to Paris in September to the Bagatelle event, where beauty, style, and elegance are the pre-eminent criteria, and it took Best in Show.

A well-rounded Company

Even more so than tires, wheels are one of the most underestimated components of a vehicle; surely there is far more to them than simply being round and shiny? Thanks to a recent visit to the headquarters of Speedline America Corporation, and insights provided by its President David Bones and operations manager Bill Hoffman, we were given an eye opening glimpse into just how much goes into the manufacturing of the wheels chosen as original equipment by Ferrari.

The Ferrari year can't begin, it seems, without the official calendar published by Gunther Raupp in Germany. It is now in its fourteenth year, and it has survived (while a host of others have failed) because of its large size, striking images, good graphics, and quality printing.

17 American English González honored at Coys

At the large Silverstone event honoring Ferrari last year, Froilán González was presented with a new "old" helmet by helmet maker Patey. It was the same type that he wore in his glory years in the 1950s, and of course, he was the first Ferrari driver to win the British Grand Prix. So the presentation was opportune.

American English San Diego Concours expands its horizons

After sixteens years as an excellent but primarily local show, the event has been expanded to include a road rally and vintage hillclimb, all in and around San Diego and La Jolla. Symbolic Motor Cars was the inspiration for adding the several new facets to an already fine affair.

20 American English Le Mans in 1967 - what went wrong
The real reason now revealed concerning Ferrari's loss to Ford in this epic battle

In 1967 we lost at Le Mans against the Ford Mk IV for many different reasons. First of all, it must be mentioned that during that year, in addition to racing in the Formule One World Championship and in the Sports-Prototype Championship with both the four liter 330 P4 and with the 2,000 cc 206 P, we also took part in the European F2 Championship with the Dino 166 F2. Furthermore we were also competing for the European Mountain Championship, where we were present with a Group 7 Dino "biposto-corsa" with four valves per cylinder. Therefore, Ferrari's Technical Department and I were busy on five different fronts, one more than in 1966.

We know nothing

There's is not much to be said for this thing, other than that it is ungainly and a poor use of a good Ferrari. Who? What? When? Where? Why? We don't know.

American English Japan has the final word

As the celebrations for Ferrari's 50th Anniversary began to wan (and it was quite a year), the Ferrari Club of Japan held a final farewell at the "Venini Est", the Italian restaurant owned by Ferrari enthusiast Junichiro Hiramatsu. Centerpiece was a cake modeled after the now famous 50th anniversay logo.

Nothing short of the most exclusive Ferraris on the road

It is usually a Ferrari not seen in public for a long time that we very often meet, almost accidentally, and it is the immediate poise, the presence, the self-possession of the animal that captures our curiousity and propels our fascination. One most recent example is the Series III Ferrari 410 Superamerica, an unexpectedly large and certainly handsome Ferrari which gained initial fame as being part of the immense stable of automobiles (800) owned by the gambling entrepreneur William Harrah.

All the Ferraris entered in the two decades of this succesful recreation of history are noted

In 1977, the Automobile Club of Brescia and the Musical Watch Veteran Car Club of Brescia sought to reestablish the great 1,000 mile race through Italy, a classic event that had been cancelled twenty years before. All sports cars built 1957 and earlier were eligible, and they would run a regularity race as opposed to an outright competition. The public roads through Italy, from Brescia to Rome and back, were to be the same as used in the earlier races. Would the public take notice?

Ferraris have become the marque of choice at the Colorado Grand as seventeen models were part of the over ninety cars enjoying the camaraderie and ambience of the Rocky Mountains in autumn. 47 American English F333 SP finished 1997 season at Laguna

The Ferrari F333 SPs have thrilled crowds the entire season, and campaigned before a large audience at Laguna Seca, the final race. In a display of esprit de corps, many of the Ferrari teams took care of each other's cars on and off during the year, and often switched crew members, engines, body parts and even chassis tubs back and forth as needed. An historian's future nightmare is unfolding, but throughout 1997's eleven races, all available chassis were on the starting grids, ready to race

46 American English Whither Professional Sports Car Racing?

It was at the October Sebring weekend that everything fell apart for the sanctioning body "Professional SportsCar", as a new series was announced, beginning at the Daytona 24 Hours, and sanctioned by the SCCA. To be called the United States Road Racing Championship, it already has most of the country's tracks signed up, giving the PSC no place to go.

Despite the uncertainty of the future sanctioning body for sports car racing in the U.S., several efforts are moving forward to increase the number of Ferraris on the grid. Ferrari of Houston owner, Giuseppe Risi, has bought two of the new Michelotto models, s/n 17 an d18, to be campaigned with the Dan Doyles, Senior and Junior, of Doyle Racing.

46 American English Ferrari Historic Challenge announced

Ferrari North America will organize for 1998 a vintage Ferrari Championship called the "Ferrari Historic Challenge." Similar to the successful series organized in Europe by Ferrari of Italy, it will be added as a special attraction to the 1998 Ferrari Challenge. The goal is to offer Ferrari events, hosted on different race tracks around the U.S., where vintage race car enthusiasts can run their Ferraris in a real race series.
