In september 2000 werd tijdens een feestje voor speciaal genodigde gasten op de Villa Montezemolo de 550 Barchetta Pininfarina gelanceerd. De open versie van de 550 Maranello, gelanceerd dus bij Ferrari's topman thuis, werd in gelimiteerde oplage uitgegeven om het 70-jarig bestaan van Pininfarina te vieren. Ondanks een niet mis te verstaan prijskaartje was volledige oplage al bij voorinschrijving verkocht.
